The conventional Oil impregnated internally fused APP Type of capacitors have certain disadvantages in the areas of flammability , Protective devices etc which make them undesirable in special applications / installations like Petrochemical / Chemical Industries , Offshore Gas and Oil Platforms , Public places etc.

We introduce ELECTRONICON range of MSD Dry Type medium voltage capacitors rated upto system voltages of 12 KV AC, 3 Phase , 50/60 Hz.

The MSD technology is based on the logical development of proven self-healing technology for low-voltage power capacitors. It also permits the economic manufacture of medium voltage capacitors without employing inflammable and environmentally critical fluid oil fillings. The actual active capacitor element consists of a large number of high-quality, self-healing round MKP elements, which are wired to each other and installed in a stainless steel enclosure. The MSD range of capacitors are filled with solid materials, i.e. dry, instead of combustible liquid as with All-film medium voltage capacitors. High-quality insulation between the active elements and the enclosure is achieved using a special process, which is designed and tested to suit the requirements for the nominal insulation voltage of the capacitor. This special insulation is of crucial importance for the safe operation of the internal pressure monitor: Self-healing capacitors are not (yet) covered by current standards for medium voltage capacitors, such as IEC 871, however, the MSD series fulfils all electrical and safety requirements of these standards. It has to be noted that the MSD capacitors like any self healing capacitor do not produce short circuits and can therefore not be disconnected from the system by internal or external blow-out fuses. This task is performed by integrated over-pressure switches as described in the standards applicable to capacitors for power electronics and for inductive heating. (VDE-EN 61071 and
VDE-EN 60110)

BENEFITS OF THE NEW MSD TECHNOLOGY

Short-circuit currents are not possible due to the high-resistance fault characteristic of the self-healing dielectric. Special, short-circuit current limiting capacitor fuses are not necessary. Functional switching devices are sufficient for tripping.
The costs of the monitoring circuit are very low. It is sufficient to control the tripping function of the switch via the normally closed contact of the pressure monitor.
Every enclosure is monitored separately. Any number of individual capacitors can be grouped together for protection purposes.
As a consequence of the different partial failure mode of MSD capacitors compared to that of Allfilm capacitors, the possibility of current imbalance in the three phases can be almost totally ruled out. Hence monitoring of the star point is unnecessary which leads to further reduction of installation cost.
Oil sumps are unnecessary due to the dry design; no oil that could pollute the local environment. No disposal problems at the end of useful service live.

significantly smaller temperature sensitivity of capacitance with values of approx. 2.5 x 10-4 compared to a 60% higher value for All Film dielectrics

The range of APFC Panels incorporate high levels of standardisation and are the result of years of our experience in design and engineering of Capacitor Systems for PF Improvement.  When the loads vary very rapidly , the Contactor Switching solutions for PF Improvement may not be suitable due to the inherent condition of the need for capacitors to discharge prior to switching back into circuit. This gives a limitation of switching capacitors once every minute and unsuitable for rapidly varying loads.

Switching of Capacitors results in large inrush currents that cause temporary disturbances or ripples in the electrical system. These inrush currents are further augmented during parallel switching of capacitors and switching of capacitors under harmonics. It is reported that such inrush currents can be as large as 300 to 1000 times the rated currents for a small measure of time when capacitors are switched into the circuit. The increasing use of power electronics and electronically controlled systems in manufacturing are adversely effected with large Capacitor switching inrush currents.

The need for rapid and transient free switching of capacitors are satisfied with VISAPOWER Real Time Power Factor Correction Systems.

The use of ELECTRONICON Thyristor Switches and Dynamic Controllers coupled with our experience of PF correction has resulted in the development of Real Time Power Factor Correction ( RTPFC) solutions for rapidly varying loads like Cranes , Lifts , Welding & Fabrication Machines , Rolling Mills , Forging, Glass Industries etc and other modern day loads in industries . The RTPFC Panels provide transient-free or zero current rapid switching ( upto 300 times every minute) of capacitors. This feature ensures that the Power factor is improved almost as instantly as the load varies.
