PE (Polyethylene) is a macromolecule in the simplest structural form and also the best-known macromolecule material
Introduction of PE (Polyethylene):
PE (Polyethylene) is a macromolecule in the simplest structural form and also the best-known macromolecule material in widespread use. It is formed by repeated combination of CH2 molecules. Through addition of ethylene (CH2=CH2), Polyethylene is thus produced.
The verified natures of PE (Polyethylene) are adopted simply through various means of addition. Under medium pressure (15-30 atmospheric pressure), a good catalyst for organic chemical compound to engage in Ziegler-Natta polymerization, high density polyethylene (HDPE) is thus formed. In this circumstance, polyethylene polymer is not only linear but with very long molecule chain and hundreds of thousands of molecule weight. When in high pressure (100-300MPa) and high temperature(190-210), a good catalyst for hydrogen peroxide to perform free radical polymerization, we produce low density polyethylene of branchy structure.
Magnitude of polymerization pressure: high pressure, medium pressure, and low pressure;
Practical method of polymerization: silt method, solution method, and barometric method;
Density of products: high density, medium density, low density, and linear low density;
Molecule weight: low molecule weight, general molecule weight, and extra high molecule weight.
The character of PE (Polyethylene):
With no odor, poison but sense of wax in touch, PE possesses excellent cold-resistant nature (applicable for the lowest temperature of 70-100), good chemical stability, sustainable for various acid/alkali (it does not sustain oxidation-prone acid; in ordinary temperature, it will not dissolve in other solution, can absorb little water, being a very good insulator; however, PE is sensitive to environmental effect (chemical and mechanical effect) and poor to sustain heat.
The various natures of PE (Polyethylene) are due largely to its quality and origin, that is, the structure and density of its molecules.
Types of PE (Polyethylene)
(1) LDPElow density PE, high pressure PE
(2) LLDPElinear low density PE
(3) MDPEmedium density PE, two-humped resin
(4) HDPEhigh density PE, low pressure PE
(5) UHMWPEextra high molecule weight PE
(6) Corrected PECPE, PEX
(7) Ethylene polymer: ethylene-propylene polymer (plastic), EVA, ethylene-butylene polymer, ethylene-olefin(POE, ROE) polymer, ethylene-unsaturated ester polymer(EAA EMAA EEAEMAEMMAEMAH)
When molecule weight of linear PE reaches 3,000,000-6,000,000, the linear PE is called extra high molecule weight PE (UHMWPE). The extra high strength of UHMWPE is good in making bulletproof vest.
